Norwegian Prima Cruise Ship: Overview and Things to Do

ncl prima cruise

The Prima has several bars and lounges scattered throughout the ship. I ate at Cagney's Steakhouse, Hasuki for teppanyaki, Le Bistro for French cuisine and Palomar for seafood. The food at all of the specialty restaurants was wonderful, and I was definitely stuffed afterward. The two main dining rooms, Hudson’s and The Commodore Room, are the free options.

Entering this exclusive space, the concierge desk is off to the left. Thus, we made a pitstop to reserve our dining and entertainment reservations for the trip. One of the team members had us select our preferences on a paper and said he would take care of it. When you choose to apply (and are approved) for a new credit card through our site, we may receive compensation from our partners, and this may impact how or where these products appear. TPG's Gene Sloan has been reporting live from Norwegian Prima as it sails from Reykjavik to Amsterdam on a non-revenue preview voyage for media and travel agents.

Indulge Food Hall offers the atmosphere of a food truck court with the convenience of indoor/outdoor seating and streamlined tablet ordering. For kids, their dedicated pool has plenty of seating for them and the adults supervising them. Smaller venues for music, a comedy club and a casino are other options for entertainment. If you can’t get a space, check regularly as cancellations do occur.

This venue offers a variety of finely aged liquors and a small specialty cocktail menu. Be warned that many of the selections are above the $15 limit on the Norwegian Cruise Line Premium Beverage Package. When in port, there were not many organized daytime activities. In fact, Simon and his entertainment team did not host many of the usual cruise activities on this sailing.

The aft lifts rise into The Haven's public areas and interconnect decks 6 through 18. For the first time, every public area offers sea views from floor-ceiling windows. The Haven Sundeck is an exclusive sunbathing area with plenty of padded sun loungers and deckchairs and is located aft on decks 16-17. All of the ship's restaurants, including the stunning main dining room Hudson's, are located at the aft (back) of the ship. Bars tend to be more centrally located, including a number around the three-level atrium (decks 6 through 8), which gets busy at night pre- and post-dinner.

If you’re bored by the same ol’-same ol’ dining options that you see on every cruise ship, Norwegian Prima will absolutely thrill you with its culinary experiences. The ship introduces nine new food and beverage offerings to the cruise line, for a refreshed list of options. Norwegian Prima offers several options for staterooms, including a few options that you likely haven’t seen before. The ship’s newness means you can expect modern and sleek designs that will leave you feeling as if you’re staying in a luxury resort, rather than floating at sea. If you’re considering taking one of this new cruise ship’s upcoming itineraries around the world, here’s everything you need to know. We’re laying it all out — stateroom options, restaurants, activities, kids venues and more — so you can plan your upcoming vacation with ease.

Things We're Excited About On Norwegian Prima Cruise Ship

The Drop and The Rush are also two waterslides set to appear in the ship’s Aqua Park and are considered the fastest water slides at sea. As you can see, you’ll find a lot to love about Norwegian Prima just in your stateroom or suite and in the various dining and drinking options. However, you’re not likely to spend your entire cruise lounging in your suite or eating and drinking your way through the ship. Here's everything you need to know about the Norwegian Prima cruise ship, with an overview and things to do onboard. The boat has 20 decks, of which 16 are passenger-accessible and 9 with cabins.

So if you know you want to dine at many specialty restaurants, the package upgrades are a good deal. So, for example, an upcoming cruise on the Prima — a seven-day trip from Galveston, Texas, to the Caribbean in February — is about $2,400 per balcony cabin (with two people). Then you add on gratuities for the open bar at $305 and specialty dining of about $40.

More Explorations Around the Ship

But before we get into all the need-to-know details, here are a few quick stats so you can easily compare and contrast Norwegian Prima to your other favorite cruise ships. The racetrack goes around and through the funnel/smokestack, max capacity 15 cars (racing simultaneously) and allows max speeds 50+ kph (30+ mph). The unique sports facility is served by the Speedway Bar (located beneath the racetrack).

There are so many other things to do on Norwegian Prima that you’ve got to check out your options. Here’s just a taste of what you can expect to find aboard the Norwegian Prima. If the ship’s new studio staterooms are very similar to interior staterooms you may have seen elsewhere, the actual interior staterooms on Norwegian Prima are a serious upgrade from all of that. The NCL ship's namesakes are the AmaWaterways' riverboat AmaPrima (2013-built) and the AIDA's liner AIDAprima (2016-built). Next YouTube video is NCL's official release with renderings of the new-class cruiser.

You’ll need either a printed or mobile copy to show at the embarkation point. Our partners cannot pay us to guarantee favorable reviews of their products or services. You may have experiences it on fleetmates  Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Encore, but the Prima Racetrack is triple deck. It  features a longer straightaway with a racetrack of more than a quarter mile in length (1,378 feet/ 420 meters) and 22 percent larger than the current racetrack on Norwegian Encore. NCL has also rethought the theater concept onboard Norwegian Prima, so the three-story venue converts seamlessly from a state-of-the art performance stage to expansive dance floor.

Also new is a dedicated sushi spot, Nama, located across from the Teppanyaki restaurant. On Day 4 of our cruise, the cruise line hosted its famous seafood buffet in the Surfside Café. Shrimp, crab claws, oysters, and other seafood selections were plentiful here. On the starboard side of Deck 18 forward is the Kids Aqua Park. Honestly, this area consists of a few water features and not much in terms of interactive or creative elements. In The Galaxy Pavilion, there are near-endless ways to have fun.

Thus, we headed back to the room to capture some photos and videos first. If you think of it as a luxury ship plopped down on top of a big mass-market ship, it's still smaller and more intimate than most. For comparison, Seabourn Venture, the new ship that just debuted from luxury line Seabourn, is built for 264 passengers. Inside the complex, there's a private restaurant so you never have to eat in the same room with non-Haven passengers. This, in turn, requires you to run the gauntlet of Norwegian staff at the buffet entrance wanting you to wash your hands every time you want to move between the pool area and the go-kart area. Also striking is Norwegian Prima's version of Le Bistro, Norwegian's signature French eatery.

This version on Norwegian Prima has separated out the restaurant and bar into two distinct spaces. Indulge Food Hall is one of the only food halls at sea, and it's fabulous — if a little tight, spacewise. (In a perfect world, Norwegian would make it even bigger on the next ships in this series). It offers a wide range of quick-serve food venues offering everything from Mexican to Indian cuisine.

They had the same menu, which changed nightly, and the food was good. The menu was a combination of starters, mains and desserts, and you could order whatever you wanted. Cabin service is once a day, which means no turndown service or towel animals, but you can call the cabin steward if you need anything. Each evening, the steward delivers the Freestyle Daily, which is a printed copy of the next day’s activities and offers. There is an aqua park for kids, a waterslide and a few hot tubs and smaller pools and lounging areas on other decks, but no one large gathering place for water and sun fun. Bang on trend as ever, NCL is unveiling Indulge, a food hall concept at the aft of the ship with an outdoor dining area, as part of the dining options on Prima.

This space transforms from a theater to a three-story club, complete with disco balls. In the main dining room, the waitstaff were prompt as well, getting us in and out in under 90 minutes most nights. Even in new spaces, like the Indulge Food Hall, the hardworking staff were on top of their game. Tables were cleared swiftly, food was delivered quickly, and they were quick to refill water or answer questions. We are certainly looking forward to checking out some of these other restaurants on an upcoming sailing, especially Los Lobos as there have been many changes to this menu.
